The Rewards and Challenges of Social Media for a Funeral Company.

One of my clients is a funeral business. It's something I haven't shared that much, but over the summer, I found myself reflecting on a path I never imagined taking when I first started Austin Media. Back then, with a clear idea of my design aspirations, the concept of crafting posts for a funeral company wasn't on my to-do list.

But then I met Greg Inglis, a surfer and the CEO of Picaluna Funerals. We met on a boat trip sailing from Bali to the top of Java; it was a pretty crazy adventure that I will share at some point.

When I started as a designer, I knew what I wanted to do and where I'd like to end up. But since then, I have discovered that sometimes we do something we would never have wanted to do but then find it considerably more rewarding than we ever imagined.

And that is where I am, surprised by this unique responsibility's unexpected rewards and emotional challenges.

In social media, we often think of joyful moments, celebrations, bragging, and milestones. However, curating content for a funeral company has illuminated the profound impact of commemorating lives. Each post becomes a delicate dance between honouring the departed, sharing real stories and letting people know that funerals aren't a one-size-fits-all moment.

On the rewarding side, there's an unspoken comfort in knowing that these simple posts can serve as virtual memorials, capturing the essence of lives lived and lost. I feel the gratitude expressed by those left behind for preserving their loved ones' legacies, and that makes every post meaningful.

However, the emotional challenges are equally profound. Crafting posts that strike the right tone, balancing sensitivity with the celebration of life, requires constant introspection. It's a journey into the intricacies of grief, demanding a level of emotional intelligence that goes beyond conventional social media management. Sitting at your desk shedding tears for the loss of a person you never met is a very confronting feeling.

In this unexpected intersection of technology and human emotion, I find myself navigating uncharted waters. The profound impact of a single post on the grieving process has made me appreciate the weight of words and images. It's a reminder that even in the digital realm, the essence of humanity prevails.

As I continue this unexpected and fulfilling journey of crafting social media content for a funeral company, I am humbled by the privilege of playing a small role in preserving and honouring memories. The emotional resonance of each post serves as a poignant reminder that, in the realm of social media, even the simplest acts can carry profound significance.
